Background

Next, in 539 BC the city was attacked by the Achaemenid Empire under the leadership of Cyrus the Great who conquered it and held it until the time of Alexander the Great and his invasion. The people of Tyre were able to continue their trading empire with relative ease and peace for many hundreds of years by paying tribute to the Persians and acting as their navy when necessary.
