Background

The Parthian language was an ancient Iranian language spoken in the Parthian Empire, which flourished from the 3rd century BCE to the 3rd century CE. It belonged to the Northwestern Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family and was closely related to other Iranian languages such as Middle Persian (Pahlavi) and Old Persian. Like other Iranian languages, Parthian descended from the Proto-Indo-European language.

Syllabic Structure: Parthian was characterized by a relatively simple syllabic structure, with most words consisting of one or two syllables.

Writing System: Parthian was written in a script known as the Parthian script, which was derived from the Aramaic script and used primarily for official inscriptions and administrative documents.

Influence on Later Languages: Parthian exerted linguistic influence on subsequent Iranian languages, particularly Middle Persian and modern Persian. The Parthian language played a significant role in the cultural and administrative life of the Parthian Empire. While it is no longer spoken today, its legacy lives on in the linguistic and cultural heritage of modern Iran and the broader Iranian world.
